Improved flexibility may enhance performance in aerobic training and muscular conditioning as well as in sport. The key to increasing flexibility is to overcome stretch reflex (the automatic tightening of a muscle when stretched, which relaxes after approximately 20 seconds). Through this process, relaxation and rejuvenation of mind and body happens increasing the individual’s focus while opening thier range of motion.

Yoga

Yoga has the ability to strengthen the human body as well as promote weight loss. These two facets are definitely important but the true benefit to this practice is the increase of flexibility.

The endocrine system is composed of many parts of the brain and body that use chemicals, hormones, to communicate. These hormones are then released directly into the bloodstream to organs that are targeted. Although we rarely think about the endocrine system, it influences almost every cell, organ, and function of our bodies. The endocrine system is instrumental in regulating mood, growth and development, tissue function, metabolism, and sexual function and reproductive processes.

Yoga has a special relationship with the functioning of the endocrine system. This daily practice actually leads to chemical releases through some of the asanas or poses. For instance, the headstand has a direct effect on the pituitary gland. This gland, which is located inside your head, controls the functioning of all the other glands that comprise the endocrine system.

Another important part of metabolism that needs to be mentioned when speaking of exercising to lose weight is the thyroid gland.  The thyroid gland in the neck controls the metabolic rate of the body, the speed at which the chemical processes of the body occur. Like a thermostat, it regulates the level of body heat and energy produced. This gland is enhanced and strengthened with shoulder stands and other similar inversions.

As far as the correlation between the endocrine system and yoga continue, so will the benefits of daily practice and hormone balance. Asanas balance the hormonal secretions from the various glands. The twisting and bending positions of the asanas, held for specific periods of time, place continued and specific pressure on the various glands of the body, thus stimulating them in various ways and regulating their secretions.
